SOCCER CHANCE ACADEMY
Soccer Chance Academy (SCA) uses the power of soccer to inspire young people, through their development both on and off the field. Players at SCA are encouraged to be creative problem solvers and diverse thinkers in an unconditionally supportive environment. Our approach is holistic and embraces the ‘whole’ person; we recognize and celebrate the technical, physical, psychological, and social differences that make each and every player unique. The SCA development team offers players a patient and individualistic approach in order to foster a passion for the lifelong game of soccer.
Innovation is sourced and celebrated by each coach at SCA. Sessions are characterized by variety, challenge, decision-making, ownership, chaos, and individuality. Coaches are committed to minimum interference and maximum impact so that players are free to express themselves in all areas of the field, irrespective of consequence.
Inclusivity and community are at the core of SCA; we make every effort to create a climate that is non-judgmental, supportive, and collaborative. The SCA development team is also invested in providing parents with consistent communication and regular educational workshops, creating a positive learning experience for all.
We are proud to stand with US Club Soccer in our mission to put players first and we are honored to be nationally recognized on the forefront of raising the standards of youth soccer, as a Players First-Licensed club.
The individual is the syllabus
With its shared set of principles regarding development, the SCA development team places the player at the center and permits them to follow a non-traditional pathway. Sessions are planned in accordance to where players are in their growth, and not confined by a syllabus. We recognize that some players demonstrate traits that enable them to jump stages in learning and that others may require scaffolding at a particular time.
COMMITMENT TO COMMUNICATION
The SCA development team strives to provide parents and players with clear and consistent communication. We provide weekly game previews, game reviews, and training agendas. Players receive two formal evaluations each year, consisting of video clips and ongoing player targets.
Playing time
We understand that each player grows at different rates, due to psychological, physiological and environmental factors. Regardless of a child’s current performance level or maturation level, every SCA child will play at least half of every game. We recognise that each player will experience peaks and troughs throughout their journey and want to ensure no child is denied the opportunity to play significant minutes.
International Reach
With unique ties to its home club in Northwest London, Portland based SCA players have opportunities to travel abroad and connect closely with players in the UK. Tours to the UK consist of tournaments, cultural exchanges, and sightseeing. Training at SCA London occurs alongside academy players and involves two daily sessions. Games are also arranged with local academy clubs.
Parent Connection
At SCA, we recognize that in order to impact a culture, parents also need to be a part of the process. Coaches are committed to a strong parent-club relationship and prioritize the importance of communication, integrity, transparency, and education. The coaching staff also offers parent education workshops, providing an inside view to our unique player development approach.
GAMES PROGRAMS
In an effort to stretch players, we are committed to providing a unique games program that challenges conventional approaches to field size, numbers of players, single gendered teams, and age groupings. With this flexibility, we allow our players a variety of different playing environments, which supports our development principles.
DEVELOPMENT TEAM
SCA seeks coaches with high emotional intelligence who have traits of open mindedness, empathy, self-reflection, curiosity, and courage – the same traits we look to develop in our players. Our senior staff are all UEFA B (and above) qualified and have a library of experience at the elite level, both in the UK and the US. Our senior staff have also played within the professional / semi-professional game in North America, South America, Europe, and Australia.
Growing up in Witley, Surrey, Dan cannot remember a time when he did not have a ball at his feet. He spent hours upon hours playing football in his garden with his younger brother and Dad or at the local parks with friends. Dan jokingly recalls that even his sister, who was not a fan of football, was made to stand in goal as he trained!
Dan went on to play with a local club for most of his years in Surrey, before joining the nearest semi-pro teams U21s, where he was made captain. Dan furthered his education at a University in Bath, where he studied Geography. He was the only first year student to make the first team, and in his second year, took on not only the responsibility of first team captain, but also manager. This incorporated overseeing three university teams and organizing the first team, ultimately providing him his first real taste of coaching 18 to 26 year olds. It was a great opportunity for Dan, working with peers and also older students in the sport he loves.
In his final year of studies, Dan was recruited by an international soccer club at their US location. Dan began his journey in Boston during the summer of 2015, coaching a variety of groups from 4-18 on both the girls and boys side. He was thrown straight in with his own teams so it was very much a learn on the job position. Dan quickly found out a lot about himself as a coach and deeply values this experience. After a successful 6 months, Dan was presented with the opportunity to assist in the setting up of a newly formed Portland, Oregon franchise. Taking a leadership position within the club enabled Dan to utilize his leadership skills further, and continue his personal development on and off the field.
Dan is excited to be part of an innovative team at SCA with the potential to impact a cultural shift in the NW and beyond. He will look to challenge players outside of their comfort zones, with a focus on individual technique and creativity.

Joe grew up in the projects of NW London in the 1990’s, immersed in the world of street soccer with Wembley Stadium in his backyard. From dusk until dawn he would play anywhere and everywhere – in parking lots, in between houses, or unmowed fields; sometimes with just a tennis ball. Joe had to think and move his feet quicker because he was the youngest of a large pack of neighborhood players. It was a brutal environment for a young player because the standards were high and the older kids showed no mercy. If the pack of boys wasn’t playing soccer, they were waiting to catch the occasional soccer highlight show on television. Joe would also catch the Italian league on television at his cousins’ house on a Sunday afternoon.
Joe entered the English academy system at a young age with spells at West Ham United FC, Crystal Palace FC, and Fulham FC. From one week to the next, he was in and out of different clubs around London which exposed him to the harshness of the academy game. He was a creative player but the win at all costs mentality stifled that creativity. He became a risk averse player from the command-centric environment and the discouragement of individual expression. Ultimately, the academy system was a far cry from the street environment he was raised in, where doing something different or innovative was celebrated.
After a brief period in both France, the US, and Norway Joe called time on his playing days. He embarked on a career in coaching, having vowed not to repeat some of the environments he experienced when he played. Joe began coaching in his home borough of Barnet before moving into the academy world at Milton Keynes Dons Football Club in 2013, where he was mentored by Lewis Higgs, a disciple of Dan Micciche. Dan was the first football coach Joe credits as really getting the player-centric learning environment right. Joe then embarked on his journey to the United States in 2015 where he spent two years as Lead Technical Specialist in Boston, Massachusetts and then a year in Portland, Oregon as Technical Director.
Joe is convinced that Oregon, along with the rest of United States, is a hotbed of talent. He points out that the United States is a breeding ground for creative people in music, film, and engineering and soccer is no different. His hope is SCA can create a culture shift in Oregon youth soccer, with the help of parents and other youth organizations.

Born in North West London, Ben grew up in a soccer focused environment. From a young age, he organized structured games and spent countless hours playing street soccer with multiple age groups, in a variety of challenging settings.
Ben’s soccer pathway consisted of club/school/county representation to competing at a semi- professional level in the UK at the age of 17. He also went on to play in both Norway and Australia.
Ben has always been a great student of the game and even as a player, he would often challenge coaches to further his knowledge. From a coaching standpoint, he credits both his positive and negative experiences with how he approaches the game and believes they have made him into a well-rounded individual, on and off the soccer field.
Ben is the current Academy Director and founder of Soccer Chance Academy London, regarded as one of the top independent academy programs in the UK. The program has had a multitude of success in developing players that have moved into the professional game. Ben believes SCA London’s success can be replicated in the Oregon soccer scene. He is confident in the club’s ability to produce an outstanding learning environment where talent will flourish.

Born and raised in West London, a stone’s throw away from Queens Park Rangers (QPR) Football Club, Ricky had football flowing through his veins from a very young age. He could hear the roar of the crowd from his bedroom window every game night, which inspired him to pursue his dreams in the game. And he did. Growing up in a tough area in the city, football was seen as a rite of passage for locals and an opportunity for prosperity. From a very young age, he played with older kids. This required him to think of ways to beat an opponent technically or tactically due to the fact he couldn’t always compete physically.
This technical and tactical intelligence transferred into his game at his local club, QPR, before he embarked on a two year training program at Uxbridge College. The college was in partnership with semi-pro club Beaconsfield where he made his senior debut at sixteen. He was then fortunate enough to gain a scholarship to play college soccer in the USA. Ricky notes this as a life changing moment and an opportunity for him to express himself as a player and as a young man. From this experience, his world views were challenged which positively impacted him moving forward
Ricky was fortunate enough to have multiple professionals options post college, and pursued a dream move to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil for Arraial Do Cabo Football Club. Following this, he had extended trial periods with Doncaster Rovers and Aldershot Town, before playing semi-professional football for Hampton and Richmond.
All of these experiences have supported a holistic approach to his coaching, one that he hopes will continue to support players in their development. His experiences growing up and abroad have shown how important the individual is as opposed to the ‘player’. Ricky is dedicated to individual development, which he believes supports the overall player’s development.

Jared grew up on the Oregon Coast in Lincoln City, OR. He developed a love for the game on muddy grass fields in recreational soccer leagues. It wasn’t until high school that he had an opportunity to experience club soccer at Capitol FC in Salem, OR. He was able to benefit from club soccer, but also found it to be exclusive and political. After Capital FC he played for one season with the Cascade Surge in the Player Development League (PDL).
Jared was then given the opportunity to spend time playing with youth teams from Karlsruher SC and Stuttgarter Kickers in Germany. The time spent in Germany made him more aware of the teaching gap between the US and countries around the world. In Germany he saw the youth being taught to have passion for the game and the ability to love practice. This translated to more gifted players who developed a positive relationship with the sport. He finished his playing career with Peninsula College in Port Angeles, WA where his team made to the first ever NWAACC Semi-Final in school history. After his time in Port Angeles, Jared moved back to Portland and finished his schooling, earning a bachelors degree in Applied Anthropology and a minor in Business.
Jared transitioned to coaching in 2010 and worked with a variety of youth teams for Westside Timbers. Due to his belief that the game is too exclusive for youth from certain backgrounds he became the Program Director at a non-profit addressing the problem. He oversaw free after-school soccer programs for at-risk youth at 32 elementary and middle schools around the Portland Metro Area. Jared believes that all youth deserve a chance to play, and he is passionate to change the culture of club soccer. He has seen the game of soccer connect communities and be a positive tool for childhood development. Jared holds a USSF D license and a USSF Urban Soccer Diploma.
